A plunger is a simple machine that relies on human-powered kinetic energy to care for a common household problem. There are different types of plungers designed for different jobs. You may or may not be using the right type of plunger, which can make unclogging drains more difficult.
Types of Plungers
Most plungers are not universal. Various styles of plungers fall under the main categories of sink or toilet plungers. Note that you do not want to use one for the other for multiple reasons. First, using a toilet plunger in a sink is not recommended due to the potential spread of germs and/or disease. Additionally, these two types of plungers are designed differently and not made to be interchanged.
The Sink Plunger
This plunger is often referred to as a cup plunger because it looks like an upside-down cup or bowl. It is made like this because it fits flat over kitchen and bathroom sink drains and tub and shower drains. It works by forming a vacuum over the drain to dislodge clogs.
The Toilet Plunger
A toilet plunger has an extra flap that folds out from beneath, making it more flexible for a toilet drain. Many plungers offer the option to fold this flap in and create a flat plunger suitable for a sink. It’s a good idea, though, to designate one plunger for toilets and another for sinks. Make sure to bleach a plunger used in a toilet before using it on a sink.
The Accordion Plunger
The accordion plunger is made of plastic rather than rubber. It has a small cup attached beneath a larger “accordion” style, flexible drum. The small cup fits perfectly inside a toilet drain hole, while the accordion makes for a powerful force. These plungers may take practice to operate, but they can be very effective.
