What Are the Best Methods for Unclogging the Kitchen Sink

One of the biggest everyday inconveniences we face with plumbing is a clogged kitchen sink. If your sink is stopped up and you can’t get it to drain, you may need the help of a skilled plumber. There are a few things you can try first, though, to clear the clog yourself. Take a look at these methods of unclogging your kitchen sink.

  • Metal hangers. If you are experiencing a clog, straighten out a metal coat hanger and use it to try to reach the cause of the clog in your drain. Try to push the clog through or pull it out, but be sure you don’t scratch your sink in the process.
  • Plumber’s snake. If you have a clog that is located deep in your drain, a snake is a great tool to reach it and open up your pipes.
  • Clean the P-trap. If you have a clog that is located in the curved pipe underneath your sink, you can unfasten the pipe and clean it out. Be sure to place a bucket underneath to catch debris and water that may come out.
  • To use a plunger effectively, you need a tight seal. If you have a double sink, close off one of the drains and fill the one you are plunging with enough water to cover the plunger.
  • Baking soda, vinegar, and salt. A popular method of clearing clogged drains is to pour equal parts of baking soda and vinegar down the drain and wait fifteen minutes. You can also try pouring one-part salt and two-parts baking soda down the drain, allowing it to sit for a few hours, and then flushing with boiling water.
