Good Water-Saving Habits Start Now!

|

Now that school is back in session and the weather is getting cooler, most of your family time will be spent indoors during the evening and weekends. This means that more members of your family will be using the appliances and fixtures around the house.

The fall season is a time when the rains come and we all get prepared for the really cold weather of winter. But, it is also a time of year when we need to transition our water usage behavior of summer to a more conservative mindful approach. With more people in your family spending time in the home, make sure to start these good water-saving habits now:

  • For several years now water-conservation has been a priority for homeowners throughout the Country. The benefit is that there are hundreds of water-saving plumbing fixtures to choose from. Consider adding low-flow faucet and shower fixtures to keep water usage to a minimum in your house. Implementing a shower timer is a good way to reduce the amount of water that is used during the fall. When the weather gets cold, it is enticing to take a longer shower to warm-up. However, a cup of tea will do the trick and use far less water in the process!
  • Make sure to adjust your sprinkler schedule according to the weather. This is a time of year when your lawn needs much less water because the sun is not as hot and the water won’t evaporate so quickly. The time of day that you water can stay the same, but the frequency and duration can both be far less.
  • During the fall season, rain and wind storms are common and they can leave behind leaves, debris, and dirt. All of this mess can make your patio, walkways, and driveway looking unpleasant. But, rather than grabbing the garden hose to spray it all off, consider grabbing a broom or a leaf blower.

Not only does fall water-conservation benefit the planet by saving a precious resource, but it is also good for your budget. A simple dripping faucet can waste several gallons of water per month!
